Mines Seleine (Salt Mines) Below Rocher du Dauphin's surface, on Grosse-Île, lies large salt deposits that are excavated to be exported throughout eastern Canada and the United States. The mine is a whopping 300 m (984 ft) deep and is 1.6 km (1 mi) in diametre. More than a million tones of salt are produced annually, which is mostly used to de-ice slippery winter roads. |
