Welcome to Matane, QC!

A maritime town with abundant natural resources and strong ties to tradition, Matane, located in the South St. Lawrence region of Quebec on the Gaspé Peninsula, is approximately 98 km (61 mi) northeast of Rimouski and 409 km (254 mi) from Quebec City. Its orientation along the majestic St. Lawrence River and at the mouth of the Matane River has been pivotal in creating a prosperous aquaculture industry, evident as far back as the early 1500s. Its year-round shipping port, thriving regional agriculture, active commercial sector, vibrant cultural scene and low cost of living characterize the social and economic landscape of the town.

In honour of its long-time seafaring heritage, the Musee du Vieux-Phare showcases an array of historical artifacts and displays in the town's original lighthouse, which was a human-operated beacon for ships and boats from the early 1900s until the mid-1970s. The area is also renowned for its salmon fishing, easily accessible along the banks of the town's river. Located centrally, the town's dam, Barrage Mathieu-D'Amours de Matane, also features an observation area for watching the up-river migration and spawning behaviours of Atlantic salmon. The Promenades des Capitaines, a boardwalk system which stretches along the Matane River from the old port to the dam, commemorates the region's renowned boat captains through interpretive displays. Country music enthusiasts will delight in the sights and sounds presented at the annual Festival International Country Matane, which features a solid line-up of folk, western and country performances.
