Grosse Île Graveyard The Irish Cemetery on Grosse Île has more than 7,000 graves of Irish who were attempting to escape the Potato Famine of Ireland in 1847. Forced to stop their journey here by immigration officials trying to contain outbreaks of disease, these are the final resting places for the brave immigrants who endured the 60 day ocean journey to the new land of Canada, many falling ill along the way. Of the total number of victims, 1,500 remain unnamed. |
