Grosse Île Immigration and Disinfection Station Grosse Île was once the equivalent of Ellis Island in New York, opening in 1832 as an immigration station that greeted numerous British and Irish settlers escaping the Potato Famine in Europe. Once landing, new residents were forced to disinfect themselves and their clothes in an attempt to stave the spread of cholera and typhoid fever. Those who were found to be ill were forced to stay in quarantine away from their family and others until no longer contagious. |
